Now it's not very often I use the phrase ‘he sounds like a young George Michael’, but by heck, on ‘Hot Flashes’ the resemblance is uncanny. 33Hz are a New York quartet whose debut for this new label is quirkier than a bagful of stick insects; cherry-picking the good bits from Mocky's lopsided funk, the sun-kissed Eighties soul of Pheonix and - yes, honestly - Wham!’s poptastic playfulness, both tracks are fresh as hell. There’s also some decent mixes from Zoo Brazil, Rob Mello, Magik Johnson and Christopher Just. Forget McDonalds - I'm loving this. ****[4 STARS]

33Hz are the latest New York electro/funk act to make it over to this side of the Atlantic and this release shows that they’re more than yer typical androgynous live-electronic hybrid band. ‘Flashes’ oozes the sleazy funk of Cameo combined with electro’s bleep factor and ‘Crazy All The Time’ is a sweet punky disco workout. If you can ignore the accompanying cheesy house remixes - apart from Magik Johnson’s acidic take on ‘Crazy’ - this is an impressive release. 33Hz is the frequency that women have orgasms at: while they’re not quite there yet, ‘Flashes’ sees them edge ever closer to the G spot.
